WATERBURY, Vermont — The Vermont Department of Corrections says an inmate who attempted suicide at the Springfield prison last week has died at the hospital.

Officials say 34-old Patrick Fennessey of Brattleboro died Tuesday at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center of his self-inflicted injuries.

The department says Fennessey, who was in prison on a conviction of burglary and unlawful trespass, had attempted suicide by strangulation last Thursday.

Correction officials say he had started his prison term in 2010 and had been released several times after reaching his minimum release date.

The department says the Vermont State Police, the defender general's office and the Agency of Human Service are investigating the matter.
