Caregiver, husband sentenced for bilking Oregon man with dementia

EUGENE, Oregon — A Veneta, Oregon, woman who stole $100,000 from a man under her care will not have to go prison.

The Register-Guard newspaper reports ( that 46-year-old Eva Cagle was sentenced Wednesday to three years of probation. Her husband, Jason Cagle, received the same sentence and the couple must repay the victim $14,000.

Both had been held in the Lane County Jail since April 3.

A Lane County prosecutor said Eva Cagle provided in-home health care for a man suffering from early-onset dementia. After the man was admitted to a care facility, Eva Cagle stole cash and property. Jason Cagle then helped his wife spend it.

The couple bought several vehicles with the stolen money and those are going to the victim's guardian.
