RALEIGH, North Carolina — A closely-watched measure of North Carolina's economic fitness is going to offer a new snapshot of employment last month.

The N.C. Commerce Department releases the unemployment rate for April on Wednesday.

The state's unemployment rate was 5.4 percent in March, a slight uptick from 5.3 percent in February and January.

North Carolina's rate stayed below the national jobless figure in March, which was 5.5 percent for a second month.

North Carolina's jobless rate has gradually dropped over the past year from 6.5 percent in February 2014.
