WEST SENECA, New York — Fire investigators continue their search for the cause of a blaze in suburban Buffalo that killed a 68-year-old widow whose husband died last week.

Authorities tell local media that Bernadine Kowalski died early Monday morning when a fire broke out at her home in the town of West Seneca. The flames spread to a neighboring home, causing some damage.

Officials say Kowalski was found dead inside the home. Firefighters had to return to the scene late Monday night when the fire rekindled. They battled hot spots for more than three hours.

WIVB -TV reports that Kowalski's husband, Arnold J. Kowalski Sr., died last Wednesday. His funeral was Friday.
