Norway wins mixed relay races in biathlon World Cup season-opener

OSTERSUND, Sweden — Norway won both races Sunday as the biathlon World Cup season started with two separate mixed relays.

Kaia Woeien Nicolaisen and Lars Helge Birkeland combined to win a 2x6-kilometer single mixed relay, a new format that features just two skiers on each team. The duo finished in 36 minutes, 27.3 seconds to beat Canada by 11.9 seconds and Germany by 13.2.

In a regular mixed relay, with two men and two women on each team, Tarjei Boe skied the anchor leg to lead Norway to a big win ahead of Germany and the Czech Republic. Norway, with Fanny Horn Birkeland, Tiril Eckhoff and Johannes Thingnes Boe also on the team, finished in 1 hour, 11 minutes, 42.6 seconds. Germany was 33.6 seconds back and the Czechs 1:11.5 behind.
