Saginaw man who was on the run convicted in 2nd murder case; young son was key trial witness

SAGINAW, Michigan — A Saginaw man has been convicted of strangling the mother of their young son, his second murder conviction since being captured in Las Vegas more than a year ago.

Michael Lawrence faces a second sentence of life in prison with no chance for parole. A key witness was his 5-year-old son, who told jurors his parents were fighting before Angelica Olivarez was killed in April 2013.

Lawrence already is serving a life sentence for the fatal drive-by shooting of a 6-year-old in 2012.

Assistant prosecutor Chris Boyd says the Alvarez family now has peace after the latest conviction Friday. His boss, John McColgan Jr., tells The Saginaw News ( ) that the conviction will also keep Lawrence in prison in case his earlier conviction is thrown out on appeal.
