Colorado Springs man sentenced to 60 years for stabbing, beating wife to death in front of son

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado — A Colorado Springs man has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for killing his wife in front of their 12-year-old son last year.

Forty-five-year-old Robert Montoya pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and first-degree arson. Montoya stabbed and bludgeoned his wife Alicia to death in front of their son in November and knocked the phone out of the boy's hand as Alicia Montoya cried for the boy to dial 911.

Prosecutors say that Montoya used at least two knives and a large ratchet to kill his wife. Afterward he set her body on fire.

The Gazette reports ( ) that Montoya appeared in court with disfiguring burns visible on his face, neck and ears.

Montoya apologized and said he could not remember the evening because he was drunk.
