Bond reduced for man accused of holding girls at gunpoint in middle school locker room

COLUMBIANA, Alabama — Bond has been reduced for a man accused of holding a group of girls at gunpoint in a middle school locker room in February.

A Shelby County judge Wednesday reduced bond for 21-year-old Ryan Matthew Sims, of Chelsea, from $5 million to $515,000. Sims is accused of prompting a lockdown at Chelsea Middle School when a group of girls were held at gunpoint in a locker room for about 20 minutes.

Officials have said no one was alarmed when Sims walked into the school because he once worked there part time.

John Lentine and Wendell Sheffield, Sims' attorneys, say their client has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia since being incarcerated in mid-February.
