10-year-old boy dies, 11 hurt Sunday in early morning, extra-alarm apartment fire in Chicago

CHICAGO — Chicago fire officials say a 10-year-old boy died and 11 other people were hospitalized after an apartment fire on Chicago's northwest side.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the fire started around 4 a.m. Sunday in the courtyard building. The fire was extinguished about 45 minutes later, and the boy's body was discovered inside the building.

His name was not released by the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Authorities say the others, including five teenagers, were taken to local hospitals, where they were in fair to critical condition.

The cause remains under investigation, but Fire Department spokesman Juan Hernandez says it's being focused on the third floor where the fire is believed to have started.
