2 injured in building explosion, fire outside Rochester; structure housed pizzeria, apartments

EAST ROCHESTER, New York — Authorities say two people have been hospitalized after an explosion and fire tore through a suburban Rochester building housing a pizzeria and apartments.

Volunteer fire officials in the town of East Rochester tell local media that the explosion happened around 5:30 a.m. Sunday in a two-story brick building. They say one of the walls was completely blown out by the blast.

Firefighters had to battle the resulting fire from outside the building because the structure was unstable. About 75 firefighters from several departments had the blaze under control within an hour.

A man and woman living in second-floor apartments suffered burns but are expected to survive.

The cause of the explosion is unknown.

The building housed a pizza shop on the ground floor. Officials say it will be demolished.
