Iowa inmate serving life sentence for 1980 kidnapping conviction dies of cancer in prison


DES MOINES, Iowa — An Iowa inmate serving a life sentence has died while in custody at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center.

The Des Moines Register reports ( ) that 69-year-old Donald Eugene Newman died Friday of colon cancer at the Coralville facility.

Newman was convicted of first-degree kidnapping in Polk County and began serving his life sentence in 1980.
