Roanoke man pleads guilty in toddler's fatal shooting, wounding of mother

ROANOKE, Virginia — A Roanoke man has admitted his role in the fatal shooting of a toddler and the wounding of her mother.

Media outlets report 26-year-old Warner Lovings Hunter III pleaded guilty Friday in Roanoke Circuit Court to first-degree murder in the July shooting of 23-month-old Aryah Leigh Lipford. He also entered a guilty plea in the shooting of Rachael Quesenberry outside Hunter's home.

The pleas allowed Hunter to avoid a capital murder charge.

Prosecutors say Quesenberry had borrowed Hunter's car with the understanding she would return it after a day or two. She kept it for a week and was shot when she returned the car to Hunter.

Hunter faces up to life in prison. Sentencing is set for Jan. 7.
