Upstate New York woman slain, husband in custody after crashing car in northern New Jersey

HIGHLAND FALLS, New York — A 51-year-old Hudson Valley man is in critical but stable condition in a New Jersey hospital after crashing his vehicle while fleeing from a village where his wife was found slain.

State police say Leonard Salters of Highland Falls is being held Monday at University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey, pending extradition to New York.

Troopers say Friday night's killing appears to have been the culmination of a domestic dispute between Salters and his 62-year-old wife, Junco, at their apartment in a complex adjacent to the grounds of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Her body was found in the couple's apartment with multiple stab wounds. She was taken to St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital, where she died.

Information on whether Salters has a lawyer wasn't initially available.
