LAUREL HILL, Florida — Authorities say they are responding to a small plane that crashed in Okaloosa County in the Florida Panhandle, killing the only person on board.

The Okaloosa Sheriff's office said a 911 call about a small plane going down about 3 p.m. Saturday. It was a single-engine plane.

Mack Wilkins is chairman of the Almarante Volunteer Fire Department board. He told the Northwest Florida Daily News (http://bit.ly/1q8bHBy) that he lives about a mile from the crash site and that emergency responders found only one person at the scene.

Kathleen Bergen, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration, confirmed the crash and said only the pilot was on board.
