Autopsies find SC husband killed his wife at their NC vacation home; then turned gun on self

WAYNESVILLE, North Carolina — Authorities say autopsy results show a South Carolina man shot and killed his wife at their vacation home in Haywood County before turning the gun on himself.

Sheriff's Sgt. Heidi Warren told the Asheville Citizen-Times ( ) that a pathologist determined 54-year-old Richard Haynie shot his 51-year-old wife, Eva, in the back of the head last weekend, then shot himself in the mouth.

The bodies were found in the home in the North Carolina mountains Monday after Eva Haynie didn't show up for her job as a fifth-grade teacher in Pickens County.

The autopsies ruled the deaths a murder-suicide.

Warren says deputies from Haywood County and Pickens County continue to investigate the shooting.
