Freeport's historic Jameson tavern to reopen this summer under new management

FREEPORT, Maine — The historic Freeport tavern that bills itself as the "Birthplace of Maine" is expected to reopen this summer under new management.

Tom Hincks, former owner of the Fisherman's Grill in Portland, finalized a new lease for the Jameson Tavern on Wednesday. He tells The Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/14GuBEr ) he plans to complete some interior renovations and open for business before July 4.

The tavern, which had been under the same management for 30 years, closed unexpectedly in February.

It was built in 1779 and was a private residence until being converted into an inn in 1801.

On its website, Jameson Tavern says it is the site of the signing of documents declaring Maine's independence from Massachusetts in 1820. But some historians doubt that claim.
