Days numbered for unpopular red light cameras in Monroe, city won't renew contract

MONROE, Washington — Red light cameras are on their way out of Monroe.

Mayor Robert Zimmerman sent a letter Wednesday to Arizona-based Redflex Traffic Systems saying the city would not renew its contract later this year when it expires.

The Daily Herald reports (http://bit.ly/15Oa18M) Mukilteo activist Tim Eyman led opposition to the cameras since they were installed in 2011. He calls them a "money grab."

Citizens voted against the automatic ticket system in advisory elections, but courts said they were not binding.
