Mount Hood climber breaks leg in fall; rescue teams on mountain

PORTLAND, Oregon — Search-and-rescue teams are on Mount Hood to help an injured climber.

The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office says 52-year-old Robert Finke of Gladstone, Oregon, suffered a broken leg Wednesday morning after falling 100 to 200 feet.

A Portland Mountain Rescue volunteer who happened to be climbing in the same area was the first to reach the injured man. They have been joined by a member of the ski patrol as they wait for other rescuers to make their way up the mountain.

Sheriff's Lt. James Rhodes says rescuers plan to take the climber down the mountain in a toboggan. He is expected to arrive at Timberline Lodge before 6 p.m.

The 11,240-foot peak is Oregon's highest point. Thousands of people climb it each year, mostly in spring and summer.
