PHOENIX — A 44-year-old man was critically wounded when shot by several police officers after he allegedly pointed a gun at police during a lengthy standoff.
Officer James Holmes says the shooting occurred Sunday when the man emerged from a doghouse where he'd taken refuge while being sought in an earlier assault at the home of his wife in the same neighborhood.
According to Holmes, the man told police he didn't want to go back to prison and earlier fired several shots at an officer who ordered him to surrender. That officer was not injured.
Dozens of people were evacuated from their homes during the standoff.
Holmes says the man's name is not yet being released.
