Long Beach officer who fatally shot man during vandalism call is 25-year veteran of force

LONG BEACH, California — A Long Beach police officer who shot and killed a 19-year-old man while responding to a report of vandalism at a vacant apartment is a 25-year veteran of the force.

Officials released Officer Jeffrey A. Meyer's name on Tuesday in response to a public records request. But police declined to release copies of arrest and investigative reports that were also requested by the Long Beach Press Telegram ( ).

The newspaper says Meyer fired the shots that killed Hector Morejon April 23. Police say Meyer opened fire when he saw Morejon turn around and extend his arm as if pointing a gun.

The incident is under investigation.

The newspaper says Meyer was also involved in a previous officer-involved shooting, in March 2002. He has also received two awards for heroics.
