Sullivan sheriff suing county for $2.4 million wants money for department

BLOUNTVILLE, Tennessee — Sullivan County Sheriff Wayne Anderson's $2.4 million lawsuit against the county over his department's funding is set to go to trial on Wednesday.

The Bristol Herald Courier reports (http://bit.ly/12BfFrg) Anderson asked for $1.5 million in new funding for the 2012-13 budget year. He said the money was needed to cover increased fuel and utility costs and a 5 percent pay raise for staff. Anderson threatened to sue if the request was not approved.

Under Tennessee law, elected officials can sue a county if they believe their departments are not adequately funded.

In July, commissioners approved a budget with a 20 cent property tax increase. The budget included just over $460,000 in additional funding for the sheriff.

Mediation between the parties failed.
