POWNAL, Vermont — A missing 71-year-old Vermont woman has been found safe just over the state line in New York.

Vermont State Police say they found Rita Sweet Tuesday night emerging from a wooded area along Route 346.

State police say Sweet told them she left her Pownal home Monday morning after a money-related argument with family members.

Troopers say she intended to walk to Petersburg, New York to meet with family and friends.

Sweet told state police she purposely laid in the shade near the Hoosic River and slept during the day. She says she chose to start walking when it cooled off.

Troopers say Sweet showed signs of dehydration and had several blisters on her feet.

She was taken to a hospital for evaluation where she was reunited with family members.
