Governor, state board of education to honor Vermont's 2016 teacher of the year

MONTPELIER, Vermont — Vermont's 2016 teacher of the year will be honored this coming week by the governor and state Board of Education.

Susan Koch is a kindergarten and first-grade teacher at Union Elementary School in Montpelier.

Gov. Peter Shumlin and the board will hold a school-wide public assembly to honor Koch on Tuesday morning.

The state Education Agency says Koch has encouraged and developed an outdoor education program that has been extended to all grades at the school. Students are given the chance to learn in a natural setting throughout the school year.

As teacher of the year, Koch will visit schools and work with teachers around the state. She will also travel to Washington, D.C., this spring for a White House ceremony and is the state's candidate for national teacher of the year.
