DETROIT — A document says a property development business affiliated with the owner of the Detroit Red Wings has acquired nearly half of the 45-block area where the team's new arena is planned.
The Detroit News reports (http://bit.ly/1aViXZL ) the city document says Olympia Development of Michigan has paid at least $48 million in land deals in the area.
Officials in June announced a $650 million plan for a new arena and entertainment district development for the NHL team, but property details have been kept under wraps. Detroit Tigers and Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch has long said he wanted a replacement for the Wings' Joe Louis Arena.
The Associated Press sent a message Tuesday seeking comment from Olympia Development of Michigan, which is part of Mike and Marian Ilitch's business holdings.
