Panhandle sheriff's deputy hits, kills man walking along US 90

PACE, Florida — A Santa Rosa Sheriff's deputy fatally struck a pedestrian with his patrol car north of Pensacola.

The Northwest Florida Daily News (http://bit.ly/16M3WsZ ) reports 45-year-old Deputy Joseph Dunn was driving on U.S. 90 Saturday night when he struck Bruce Crutchfield.

The Florida Highway Patrol says 56-year-old Crutchfield was walking within the boundary of the outside lane, with his back to approaching traffic. Troopers say Crutchfield was wearing dark clothing.

Troopers say the deputy was unable to see the man because of lighting conditions along the road.

Crutchfield was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

FHP is not filing any charges in the crash.
