FORT STEWART, Georgia — Fort Stewart's top general and about 200 more Georgia-based soldiers are scheduled to deploy soon to Afghanistan.

The Pentagon said Tuesday that troops from the Fort Stewart-based 3rd Infantry Division's headquarters are expected to head overseas next month and remain in Afghanistan for the next year. The division headquarters includes Maj. Gen. Mike Murray, the 3rd Infantry's commander, and soldiers from his command staff.

The Georgia troops are expected to deploy for a full year, which will be spent helping Afghan security forces take a leading role in protecting the country. Some of the deploying soldiers will assume supporting roles in Qatar and Kuwait.

The 3rd Infantry headquarters will be part of the mandated limit of 9,800 U.S. soldiers remaining in Afghanistan that takes effect Jan. 1.
