HENDERSONVILLE, Tennessee — Jurors in Middle Tennessee have convicted a teenager of murder in the death of his mother, who was beaten with a sledgehammer while she slept.

Media report that jurors returned the verdict against 17-year-old Zachary Davis on Thursday after deliberating for about three hours.

Davis was charged as an adult in the 2012 slaying at the family's home in Hendersonville. He was also convicted of attempted murder and aggravated arson for setting the home on fire while his older brother was inside sleeping.

Defense attorneys had argued that Davis suffers from mental illness.

He faces life in prison. Sentencing was set for June 5.
