Man killed by LIRR train near Farmingdale station; service disrupted for several hours

FARMINGDALE, New York — Authorities are investigating the death of a man struck by a Long Island Rail Road train near Farmingdale.

Service on the Ronkonkoma branch of the commuter railroad was disrupted for several hours. Nearly 50 trains were delayed.

LIRR spokesman Sal Arena says it incident happened shortly after 6 a.m. Thursday.

The branch was operating close to schedule by about 9:45 a.m.

Arena says the engineer told police he spotted a trespasser as the train rounded a bend and that he could not stop in time. He says it appears the man made no effort to get out of the way.

The incident happened between the Farmingdale and Bethpage stations.

The dead man was not immediately identified.
