POTTSVILLE, Pennsylvania — Authorities in eastern Pennsylvania say an early morning fire claimed the life of a man.

Officials in Schuylkill County said the blaze was reported in a Pottsville building shortly after 2:30 a.m. Tuesday. Fire Chief Todd March a woman who lives in a first-floor unit was up and spotted flames coming from the windows above her.

March said the woman and her grandson were able to get out safely, and emergency crews were able to get a man out of a third-floor apartment in a neighboring building after flames spread there.

Deputy Coroner Scott Clews said 59-year-old Thomas Howard was found in the bathroom of the second-floor apartment where the fire started. He was pronounced dead shortly before 4:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
