State Patrol reports 8 killed on Ohio roadways during 5-day New Year's holiday period

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State Highway Patrol says eight people were killed on the state's roadways over the five-day New Year's holiday.

The patrol says two of the seven fatal crashes from Wednesday through Sunday involved impaired drivers. Seats belts weren't being used in four of the crashes. One of the crashes involved a pedestrian.

Also during that period, troopers arrested 365 people for impaired driving, and cited another 479 for aggressive driving.

The patrol says the eight fatalities is down from the same period at the beginning of 2013, which is the last time the reporting period was five days long. A dozen people died during that period.

Last year, three people died during the two-day New Year's holiday reporting period.
