Indictment accuses tax preparer of preparing false returns, failing to report or pay taxes

ALAMOGORDO, New Mexico — A southern New Mexico tax preparer faces numerous charges accusing her of preparing 29 false tax returns for clients and of failing to report or pay over $7,000 of gross-receipts tax on her own business.

Maria G. Ramirez of Chaparral faces a Nov. 30 arraignment in state District Court in Alamogordo on the recent indictment announced Thursday by the state Taxation and Revenue Department.

The indictment charges Ramirez with 29 counts of tax fraud and six counts of attempted tax evasion.

The district's public defender office represents Ramirez. The officer did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the allegations against Ramirez.
