Lafayette jury convicted Seth Fontenot of manslaughter in shooting death of Austin Rivault


LAFAYETTE, Louisiana — A Lafayette state court jury has convicted Seth Fontenot on one count of manslaughter in the Feb. 10, 2013, shooting death of 15-year-old Austin Rivault.

The Advertiser reports ( ) Fontenot avoided an automatic life sentence had he been convicted as charged of first-degree murder. He still could be sent to prison for up to 40 years.

The jury deliberating about two hours Wednesday.

The jury also found Fontenot guilty of two counts of aggravated battery in the shooting of Cole Kelley and William Bellamy. They were shot while driving past Fontenot's house.

Fontenot allegedly told police his neighborhood had been the target of multiple vehicle break-ins and he suspected the occupants of the truck had tried to break into his truck.

Fontenot will be sentenced at a later date.
