NEW CASTLE, Delaware — Delaware State Police say one pedestrian was killed and another was injured when they were struck by a car in New Castle that fled the scene.

It happened about 10:30 p.m. Thursday on Christiana Road. Troopers say 37-year-old Gia Smith and 32-year-old Lisa Smith, both of New Castle, stepped into the road in the westbound lanes to cross the street.

Police say the women were hit by a car and landed in the road. Authorities say the car, a silver 2007-2011 Nissan Altima, did not stop.

Both women were taken to Christiana Hospital. Troopers say Gia Smith died at the hospital; Lisa Smith was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Police do not know if the women are related.
