GOP OFFICIALS WANT RUBIO TO SEEK SENATE RE-ELECTION

Republican officials in Washington are lobbying Florida Sen. Marco Rubio to seek re-election next year even though he says he'll forgo that campaign if he makes a bid for the White House. Officials familiar with the effort say that recruiting Rubio to seek re-election is a top priority at the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

FIRST COURT HEARING IN MIAMI ON NATION'S EXPLODING AIR BAG LAWSUITS

The first hearing is set in Miami federal court for dozens of lawsuits filed around the U.S. seeking damages for allegedly defective auto air bags made by Japan's Takata Corp. The lawsuits are being consolidated for pretrial rulings before U.S. District Judge Federico Moreno, who set Friday's hearing to set a schedule and discuss other issues

SENTENCING SET FOR ADVISER IN ROTHSTEIN $1.2 BILLION PONZI SCHEME

An adviser to a major investor in the $1.2 billion Ponzi scheme operated by disbarred lawyer Scott Rothstein is facing sentencing in Fort Lauderdale federal court. A hearing is set Friday for 71-year-old Frank Preve, who faces a maximum five years in prison after pleading guilty to wire fraud conspiracy.

CABINET MEMBER ASKS FDLE TO LOOK AT NEW DOZIER FINDINGS

Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam has asked the head of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to review new findings about the former Arthur G. Dozier school for boys, where dozens of bodies have been unearthed, and see whether they warrant more investigation. In a letter dated Wednesday, Putnam — who is one of three members of the Florida Cabinet — cited a recent report by researchers at the University of South Florida.

DIANA NYAD RE-CREATES CUBA-KEY WEST SWIM IN PLAY

Endurance swimmer Diana Nyad is re-creating her 111-mile swim from Cuba to Key West in a theater near the beach where she concluded the record-setting athletic feat. "Onward! The Diana Nyad Story," a one-woman show written and performed live by Nyad, opened Thursday night at The Studios of Key West.
