FRENCH SETTLMENT, Louisiana — State police say a 35-year-old motorcyclist died when his bike became airborne after driving onto an embankment alongside La. 22 in Livingston Parish.

Trooper First Class Jared Sandifer says investigators believe Irvin Lachney, of Maurepas (MOH'-ruh-pah), was speeding east on La. Highway 22 near French Settlement Thursday night when he drove into the wrong lane and through a ditch before hitting the embankment.

Sandifer says Lachney, who had been wearing a helmet, was thrown from the motorcycle after it became airborne. He was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Gonzales, where he died of his injuries.
