Georgia man sentenced to life in slaying of legal secretary in embezzlement scheme

MACON, Georgia — A man has pleaded guilty in the death of a Macon legal secretary and has been sentenced to life in prison without parole.

The Telegraph of Macon reports (http://bit.ly/ZVE5I4) 19-year-old Michael Brett Kelly pleaded guilty Monday in exchange for being spared the death penalty. As part of the plea deal, Kelly must testify against three other people charged in the Oct. 5 death of 58-year-old Gail Spencer.

One of Kelly's co-defendants worked with Spencer before she was killed. Authorities have said the two and two others were embezzling money from the law firm Spencer worked for. Officials have said the four stole about $1.3 million from the firm.

It's not clear why the four suspects targeted Spencer.
