Hudson Valley man admits killing young woman, is expected to be sentenced to 40 years to life

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — Prosecutors say a 24-year-old man has admitted killing a young woman last year, a crime that roiled their Hudson Valley hometown.

The Dutchess County District Attorney's office tells the Kingston Daily Freeman (http://bit.ly/JdSAUw ) that Stephen Shand of Hyde Park pleaded guilty Wednesday to first-degree murder and predatory sexual assault. He's expected to be sentenced to from 40 years to life in prison on June 21.

Shand was making early morning newspaper deliveries when he encountered 18-year-old Kathryn Filiberti in a local park after she'd left a party on March 19, 2011. Investigators said he held her in his truck, raped her and then drowned her in a creek.

He was arrested after a five-month probe that left the town in fear and beset by rumors as police released little information.
