CLINTON, Louisiana — The East Feliciana Parish School Board has approved a four-year contract with newly hired Superintendent Carlos Sam.

The Advocate reports (http://bit.ly/1K6mbx1 ) Sam will be given a minimum salary of $129,500, with provisions in the contract for 2 percent pay raises annually if the board rates his performance as "satisfactory" or higher.

The school board offered Sam a contract last month following Henderson Lewis Jr.'s resignation in March. Lewis left after being named superintendent of Orleans Parish schools.

Sam is a 26-year veteran of the East Baton Rouge system, where he had most recently been an associate superintendent.

Sam's contract begins July 1, but the board agreed to hire Sam as a consultant beginning June 1 at the daily rate of pay specified in the contract.
