Members of Flint City Council call for removal of state-appointed emergency manager

FLINT, Michigan — Six members of Flint City Council are among those calling for the removal of the city's state-appointed emergency manager.

The Flint Journal reports ( ) the demand came as council members met with religious and community leaders Monday. More than 60 community members were in attendance to offer support.

Councilman Eric Mays called for the council to hold a vote to remove emergency manager Darnell Earley. Mays says that an 18-month timeline for an emergency manager in Flint ended last month.

State officials disagree. Michigan Treasury spokesman Terry Stanton says the earliest date Earley could be removed from office is April 1, 2015.

Earley has said the city is making financial progress but has work to do before returning to local control.
