HAMPTON, Virginia — A 16-year-old boy faces charges of bringing a gun to a regional school in Hampton.

Hampton police say administrators at New Horizons Regional Education Center detained the student after a faculty member reported seeing what appeared to be a firearm concealed in his clothing. The administrators found the weapon and called police.

Police say in a news release that the school was placed in lockdown as a precaution. The incident occurred Tuesday morning.

The teen is charged with possession of a firearm on school property, possession of a concealed weapon and underage possession of a firearm. He's being held in juvenile detention.

Police didn't identify the type of gun.
