Warren backs Tierney, Weld backs Tisei in Massachusetts' 6th Congressional District contest

BOSTON — Two top candidates in Massachusetts' 6th Congressional District race have won the backing of two of the state's best known political figures.

Democratic incumbent Rep. John Tierney received the formal endorsement Monday of the state's senior Democratic U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

Warren said Tierney has "fought hard to strengthen our schools, to improve access to high-quality, affordable education, and to make the kinds of investments that grow our economy."

Also Monday, the sole Republican in the race, former state senator Richard Tisei, received the support of former Republican Gov. William Weld.

Weld called Tisei an "independent problem solver" and said he worked with him at the Statehouse "to help create jobs in Massachusetts, reform our welfare system, and pass landmark education reform legislation."

Tierney is also facing four fellow Democrats in the September primary.
