NEW BRUNSWICK, New Jersey — Alcohol is suspected of playing a role in the death of a Rutgers University student.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office says 19-year-old Caitlyn Kovacs of South Brunswick appeared to be in distress while attending a gathering at the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity house early Sunday.

Some friends took her to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where she died.

Officials are awaiting results of an autopsy.

Rutgers President Robert Barchi issued a statement calling the death of the sophomore a tragic loss for the Rutgers community.

Counselors were made available to students.
