MLS Crew beats USL Pro's Dutch Lions 2-1 in US Open Cup's 3rd round

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Justin Meram's 84th-minute goal lifted the MLS's Columbus Crew to a 2-1 victory over the undermanned Dayton Dutch Lions in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday night.

The Dutch Lions, of the USL Pro league, lost Brock Granger to a red card in the 14th minute. Granger was the last defender, and brought down Eddie Gaven to give the hosts the man advantage. But Dayton kept the match scoreless through the first half.

In the 52nd minute, Gaven scored off an assist from Federico Higuaín. But the Dutch Lions came back when Shane Smith tied it in the 78th minute.

Gaven left with an apparent leg injury in the 86th minute after a challenge from a defender.
