SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City police say an officer shot and wounded a man after he lunged at the officer with what was believed to be a knife.
Police say they responded to the man's apartment unit late Friday after receiving a report that he was experiencing a mental health crisis and threatening to burn down his home.
Investigators say the man refused to come outside, and officers entered the residence to ensure the safety of the man and other residents after smelling natural gas.
The man is accused of lunging at one of the officers, who fired once.
The man was taken in serious condition to the hospital, where he was expected to recover.
The name and hometown of the man and the extent of his injuries were not immediately disclosed.
The officer has been placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome an internal investigation into the shooting.
