Unified school board in Memphis suspends search for superintendent until next year

MEMPHIS, Tennessee — The unified board of the Memphis and Shelby County schools has suspended its superintendent search.

Interim Superintendent Dorsey Hopson says he will continue to lead the system until a permanent director is found.

The Commercial Appeal (http://bit.ly/18cpHS0 ) reported the board accepted a strong recommendation by its search firm to suspend the search until next year.

There are 23 members on the unified school board, but there will be between seven and 13 members as of Sept. 1.

Current board member Kevin Woods has sympathy for potential superintendent candidates, saying if the unified board hired a superintendent, that wouldn't be the body the new director would be reporting to.

PROACT Search told the committee by letter is was having a hard time getting the "right" candidates.
