Family questions fatal police shooting of Long Beach student, say he needed help

LONG BEACH, California — The family of a Long Beach student is questioning why he was fatally shot by police in May.

The Los Angeles Times reports ( ) that 20-year-old Feras Morad either jumped or fell out of a second story window on May 27 and was subsequently shot by police.

Details on what happened after police arrived to help the unarmed, apparently confused man are in dispute.

Police say an officer opened fire after Morad fought with him and was not subdued by a Taser.

The man's cousin, Kareem Morad, told the Los Angeles Times last week that the student had a bad reaction to hallucinogenic mushrooms and needed help.

Morad's family and friends demonstrated outside the Long Beach Police Department Thursday.

Police say there is no video footage of the confrontation.
