Fire forces desperate residents to jump through 3rd-floor windows to safety in East Hartford

EAST HARTFORD, Connecticut — Authorities say a fire that raced through an apartment building in East Hartford has forced residents to jump from third-floor windows to safety, leaving two people with injuries.

Sgt. Peter Vanek said emergency dispatchers received a call reporting the fire at about 6:30 a.m. Saturday. Officers who arrived at Bell Court Condominiums saw residents jump through windows because the stairwell was in flames.

Vanek said at least two people suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Firefighters evacuated the remaining residents and put out the blaze.

The fire marshal is investigating.
