Greenwood doctor charged in murder-for-hire case scheduled for competency hearing


GREENWOOD, Mississippi — A Greenwood doctor charged in a murder-for-hire case is back in Leflore County for a competency hearing that could determine if or when he will stand trial.

The Greenwood Commonwealth reports ( ) Dr. Arnold Smith was returned to the county jail on Sept. 12 from the Mississippi State Hospital in Whitfield. The competency hearing is scheduled for Oct. 8.

Smith is charged with murder as the alleged instigator of a plot that ended April 28, 2012, with the death of gunman Keaira Byrd and the serious wounding Derrick Lacy. Byrd allegedly was hired to kill Lee Abraham, who represented Smith's ex-wife in their divorce years ago. Smith is also charged with two counts of conspiring to murder Abraham.

Abraham was not injured in the gunfire.
