CROSBYTON, Texas — A West Texas woman has been sentenced to life in prison over the January death of a toddler in her care whose body was found in a box in her basement.
Prosecutors say 42-year-old Matilda Almaraz of Crosbyton on Wednesday pleaded guilty to murder in a plea deal.
Almaraz had faced a capital murder charge over the death of 2-year-old Leah Marie Aguirre and a possible death sentence if convicted.
Crosby County District Attorney Michael Ward says Almaraz said she was bathing the child with the girl started crying. Ward says the woman acknowledged hitting the child in the head with a board.
Leah's body was found in the woman's home last Jan. 10. Investigators say the victim's mother gave Almaraz temporary custody in September 2012.
