Cleveland summit on backlog of rape kits includes officials from Detroit, Memphis

CLEVELAND — Law enforcement and public officials from Detroit and Memphis, Tennessee, are in Cleveland to talk about how to handle the large backlog of rape kits that await lab testing in each of those cities.

The officials are coming together this week for the first-ever Sexual Assault Kit Backlog Summit.

Also joining prosecutors, investigators and state and city leaders at the two-day meeting are national experts in victim advocacy and federal officials who study and support justice system projects, according to The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer ( ).

All three cities have backlogs of rape kits that need to be tested for DNA matches by state crime labs.

Officials say they hope the partnerships they form will allow them to jointly collect data and help other cites dealing with their own backlogs.
